This sculpture is a collaborative piece with artist Juliana Castro from Columbus College of Art and Design. She constructed the wooden structure that is the base of the piece and cast clear plastic replicas of tree bark to help blur the line between the cut wood and nature. Using melted plastic and fencing sourced from the streets of Detroit I built the “stained glass” windows that decorate the outside and form the walls of the walkway.
The basis for this project was a walk we took together on call in our perspective cities, same route but over state lines. We were intrigued by the sharp industrialness and maintained buildings of Columbus vs the architecture and streets of Detroit returning to nature and showing the wear of the years. We built this sculpture based off of a church tower in Columbus, but we reimagined it with materials that were found on the street and showcase the way life in the city changes places.
This piece has been displayed in the two exhibitions, Derive[d] Acock Gallery, Columbus OH and We Walked Together Center Galleries, Detroit MI.
